In 2010 we were invited to design this magnificent Victorian balcony and staircase for a private residence in Bristol. The balcony is 7.5mts long by 2 mtrs wide with a 2 mtr straight stairs going down to a rest landing with 2 Victorian 1676mm diameter spirals leading down to the garden. The Regent Ornate balusters on the landing add character and variation to just using the Victorian balusters on the straight stairs and spiral sections. The main balcony area is supported by 4 “Dublin” columns as well as the walls of the house.

To complicate this installation there was no direct access to the garden area and the whole structure, which was made in sections, had to be lifted over an 2.5 mtr wall. The local installer has made an excellent job of fitting this project completing the installation in 2011. All the casting were produced in our own foundry, Milton Aluminium Castings, in Stoke on Trent and put together by our team at Cottage Craft Spirals prior to delivery. This is the largest single structure we have built in the 20 years of manufacturing spiral stairs and balconies.

This contract with Bailey Construction was for a beautiful solid Oak Helical stairs for a farm house conversion in South Derbyshire. The stairs were design by Cottage Craft Spirals with input from the client and Bailey Construction which involved a number of visits to the showroom to ensure the design was exactly what the clients wanted. The beautiful bespoke piece of furniture was then fully constructed in our workshop before being delivered and installed by Bailey Constructions own team. These sweeping stairs created a statement of grandeur and with the curve balcony balustrade around the open galley. The final effect was stunning. The cost of the project was in the region of £18000.

New solid timber spiral range by Cottage Craft Spirals.

This new range has been design to reduce the cost of a solid timber stairs from our more bespoke range by simplifying the design and reducing manufacturing times.

The Derbyshire range can be built in any diameter up to 1900mm and to any tread angle with no extra cost. The most popular timbers are Oak, Ash and Sapele but if you have any individual requirements please let us know.

The spiral has a simple bobbin design with 3 baluster options, 70mm square newel posts and a 45 x 70mm handrail. The tread thickness is 32mm up to 1600mm diameter and 44mm up to 1900mm diameter. The treads are supplied in 3 machined pieces, tread top, bobbin and riser, which are then glued together on site when assembling the stairs. As with all our spirals we fully erect them in the workshop and house the spiral handrail into the newels top and bottom.

The landing balustrade is supplied in pre drill lengths at 130mm spaces unless otherwise requested.

These stunning 3 flights of stairs were designed with the clients, Mr & Mrs Coleman, for a substantial property in Essex. This has been one of our largest commissions and the final results were very rewarding. The quality and finish achieved is compliment to both our staff and those of the Coleman’s and the ability to work together to achieve their design features within the space constraints we had, particularly headroom. In the wall string of all the stairs the client fitted small LED light fittings which create a stunning feature when dark.

The main Oak stair has a helical section on the bottom 6 treads with a bull nosed bottom tread. The cut strings have a decorative moulding which compliments the traditional Victorian cast balusters. The handrail was specially made to a “chunkier” section than normal and newel posts were hand carved by our craftsmen from 150mm square Oak. All the stairs were boarded and plastered on the underside in a traditional manner and painted white.
The stairs down to the pool and gym area have a kite section towards the bottom the design of the cast Victorian balusters, handrail and newels is continued. The stairs to the second floor was a conventional straight flight and again continued the design features. The light well at first floor level is complimented by the beautiful chandelier fitted by the client.

Cottage Craft Spirals was started in 1982 and was acquired by Richard and Billie Harding in 1992. In 2007 we opened Tilley’s London Castings in Highgate, London and with the guidance of Gloria and Bob Tilley we have significantly developed the sales of the spiral stairs in the south east of England as well as offering a first class service for the supply and fit of gates, railings, security grills and specialist supply and renovation of cast iron railings, a dying skill. In 2009 the foundry we had used in Stoke on Trent since 1982 was acquired giving us complete control of the manufacturing process.

With effect from the 1st April 2011 all three companies will be consolidated into one company, Harding Sales Ltd, with each part continuing to operate as a trading division, therefore maintaining its identity.

As part of our expansion Cottage Craft Spirals is looking for new premises in order to increase the manufacturing output of the spiral stairs and further develop new designs.

The new premises will continue to be in the beautiful Peak district of Derbyshire and as a result we have contracted to take an apprentice from our local high school, who has been undertaking work experience for the last 2 years.
